| About Ericsson R520m prototypes
There was several variants of pre-production or develompent Ericsson R520m prototypes what we know. I searched the esato.com forum and collected some info. There are prototype TU1, TU2, TU3 trial units, ?evaluation sample? and ?debug sample? versions with different hardware versions and different manufacturing date. And there are misteryous ?real protos? too. I think the TU trial units are late prototypes made for for field-test and given to Ericsson employees and testers to use them every day and report bugs. I think the ?real? (early) protos are used inside the factory only. All known protos are copper colored. See table above. According to esato forums the first prototypes (up to TU1) have been a little lighter back while later (TU2) protos have been a little darker. But my collector friend reported his TU1 and TU2 modells has indentical back. The earliest protos (?real? protos) have been Jetduell game in their software, later protos have been Tetris and Ballpop games. The final release of R520m software hasn?t got any game. The last Prototype TU3 version what I saw made on the 13th week of 2001 but on this week Ericsson produced the first final versions too. It?s interesting, evaluation samples was made on the 6th week with filnal R1A hardware revison.
Prototypes hasn?t got final TAC (Type Approcal Code) because these made before the official type approvation. So protos using special IMEI numbers starting with zero. IMEIs starting with 00-09 assigned for pre-approvation test units.
Ericsson released R520m officially in June of 2000 on CommunicAsia exhibition in Singapore, but it started to ship the final versions in 2001, because there was some problem with new tecnologies (GPRS and Bluetooth). There was a product recall too in april of 2001 because battery drain bug: ?Ericsson will withdraw from the market the model GPRS R520m because of a defect of the settings. For Boder, spokesman of Ericsson, asserted that the company is withdrawing all the models delivered in Sweden and a pair of other European markets, because of a bug in the setting of the model.? As I know the most of final models made with silver finish. Only 25 000 pices made with copper exterior.
And how many prototypes were made and how many is the hand of collectors today I dont know.
If you have R520m protos or more info, please write here! | |
