Available exclusively through Motorola Sales and Signature Dealers, this VIP model was offered to customers who subscribed to Motorola's VIP program, offering 5-year warranties on all of Motorola's cellular products, as well as a discounted trade-up for the newest model on the market, generally before distribution to the general public. For the 8500 VIP, members were offered the original StarTAC very early, and featured a black housing with a red LED display including all of the available accessories (slim and standard lithium-ion main batteries, slim and standard auxiliary lithium-ion batteries, handsfree kit, desktop charger, cigarette lighter adapter, and instructional video). At the customer's request, their name could also be engraved on the top flip of the handset in gold. The exclusive software onboard the VIP model also offered lowercase alphabetic characters and special symbols when storing phone numbers. Original MSRP: USD $1,995

Hi guys,

Does anyone of you know what the imprint Will on the StarTac means? I know that Motorola has given some VIP mobile phones with the user's name. some Oscar winners were rewarded with a VIP StarTac as well.

Do you have any idea?

Thanks and cheers
Thomas

There were some phones given away to Celebrities at the Oscars, but also at other events such as golf tournaments. These usually had their name engraved on the phone. Of the personalized models I've seen for the general public who were VIP members, their first and last names were engraved in what I believe was Lucida Calligraphy font or something similar. It might be that for celebrities, a different font was used and maybe not their whole name.

But that could also just be an internal test model that was engraved for someone working in Motorola. It's hard to say. What you might want to do is check to see if that phone has a phone number, and see what area code it is from to get an idea of its history. I believe Motorola Mobility was headquartered in Illinois in that era. Or if it belonged to a celebrity, it might have an area code like 310 or 323 (Hollywood/Los Angeles).
