This car phone actually first appeared as early as 1984, going by an old ad I have.
My handset has a 1991 date code on it.
>>>
As Cellnet and Vodafone started in January 1985 it is unlikely that the 6000x was available until very late in 1984. The 8000x the hand portable was available on launch for ÂŁ2,800. The 6000x was ÂŁ1,600 + fitting.

I do not have the very large matching Dynatac transceiver unit, just the handset.
The original transceiver is very hard to find.
Sadly, the handset is also faulty, the only key that works is the power button, all the others are not functional.
There is no earpiece audio either. But the display is fine.
I have tried using it with various other transceiver units, but always has the same faults.
Would love to find another one of these phones one day.

There are some cases when handsets are so incompatible with transceivers that they won't do anything outside of turning on. I used to have a Dynasty handset with no transceiver, and running on my 4500 transceiver, it was so erratic that it would only power on, then it would start ringing!

Seeing as the handset appears to be in good shape, I bet it would work perfectly with the correct transceiver. What is the part number of the transceiver you got with it? I can probably trace it to another phone.

Hi Trent and all.
Ok, the model number on this handset is AS2161B. The prefix AS being for an Australian version handset.
Now get this, the model number on the transceiver unit it came with is the same AS2161B.
Pretty damn sure this is the correct transceiver for the handset after all.
The transceiver is the same basic type as the America series 820 bag phone.

I really think the handset is faulty still.
When the handset is connected to its original transceiver, the display works fine, I have it running in test mode as you can see in the first photo. No loaner message.
When I place a call to the phone, it displays the call message, and a very cool thing happens. The two red/green LEDs at the bottom of the keypad that normally show the locked, power on status start alternate flashing red & green !
A very good visual indicator of an incoming call.
If the call is unanswered, the red/green flashing continues until a button is pressed.
The handset will only pick up the call when it is removed from its cradle, the send button has no effect.
During a call, there is no TX or RX audio in the handset at all.
I think the handset is faulty.
I have tried using another handset with the same transceiver, and it works fine, so the transceiver appears to be ok.

Interesting, definitely something wrong with the handset then. Too bad since it appears to be in otherwise perfect shape. I wonder what could be wrong?

I would guess that the keypad encoder chip is faulty, but I really need a schematic.
I forgot to mention that I did take the handset apart, and it appears that someone else has tried to repair it.
The 3 wires that connect to the volume control buttons on the side were all broken off, I did not break them.
Have reconnected them, but still no good.
Will certainly keep an eye out for another handset.

The 6000x was my first cellphone in February 1986. It was fitted to my 1979 Ford Fiesta, then a Toyota Corola and finally a Subaru Legacy. Then GSM arrived and I got a handset!
