Original press release:
Nokia launches a new and advanced NMT 450 phone

June 29, 1999

The Nokia 640 - attractive design - built to last

Nokia has today announced a new product for the NMT 450 networks. The Nokia 640 is an innovative and easy to use analog mobile phone, which features true 3 volt technology and the Nokia NaviKey concept. The product will be available in the 3rd quarter of 1999.

The operation times of the Nokia 640 are impressive for an analog mobile phone. With the standard NiMH battery the phone weighs 195 grams, and it has a standby time of up to 80 hours and talk time of up to 1 hour 30 minutes.

"The Nokia 640 brings many advanced features of modern mobile telephony to the personal needs of NMT 450 customers. The users of the Nokia 640 can also take full advantage of the NMT 450 Plus services with operators who offer them," said Robert Andersson, Vice President, Sales, Nokia Mobile Phones, Europe and Africa.

The Nokia 640 supports 22 languages. It has 20 ringing tones and one extra location reserved for a new ringing tone that can be downloaded over the air. The features also include an alarm clock, calculator and four games. Most accessories are compatible with the Nokia 5100 and 6100 series mobile phones. The Nokia 640 fully supports the NMT 450 Plus features, such as short message service, calling line identification and the real-time clock.

Nokia is the world's leading mobile phone supplier and a leading supplier of mobile and fixed telecom networks including related customer services. Nokia also supplies solutions and products for fixed and wireless datacom, as well as multimedia terminals and computer displays. In 1998, net sales totaled EUR 13.3 billion (USD 15.7 billion). Headquartered in Finland, Nokia is listed on the New York (NOK), Helsinki, Stockholm, London, Frankfurt and Paris stock exchanges, has sales in over 130 countries and employs more than 47 000 people worldwide.
