Ok, great to have a discussion about this phone, since I own one !
Have just made up a brand new nicad battery pack for mine, the original one was totally stuffed.
12.5V 1400mAH Nicad pack, D Cells.
My phone still works very well, is very fun to actually use it carrying around !
Good exercise too !
Has a nice sounding ring tone too.
Uses a 4 digit lock code, unique to each phone, but I do not know the code for mine, so will not be locking it ever.
Cannot edit the NAM data, is hard coded into an Eprom, so no changing phone numbers with this one.
You can change the system ID, however.
The phone cost $3880 AUD new, a huge amount at the time.
Two versions of the Attache existed, the 8 hour battery pack model (my one), and a 4 hour battery pack model.
I also have the original matching mains power supply unit for charging (13.5v 5A).

Cheers, Chris.

Hywel, the handset & cradle you have would have belonged to a BT Diamond phone, exactly the same type of transportable phone, but an ETACS version.
I have only found the one small photo of a BT Diamond on the web so far, no other info at all.
It is interesting to note that many of the British Telecom phones were exactly the same types as sold by Telecom Australia, especially the NEC models, but ETACS versions of course.
Even the BT Roamer phone by Misubishi was the same sold here as the Telecom Walkabout in 1987.
I do wonder if British Telecom & Telecom Australia ever co-ordinated phone purchases with each other at the time ?
