Hi guys. I just recently obtained, for a very good price, a large box of Motorola AMPS mobile phone stuff, from an ex-Motorola service tech. I now have a few more Dynatac brick phones, including an actual 8000x, but not the original 1983 model, this one was made in 1989. Has a green LED matrix display. Also got a 9800XL with the very nice two line red matrix display. However, the best thing of all is that I now have a complete copy of the official Motorola level A & B servicing manual, for most of the Microtac, Dynatac portable, and bag/transportable phones, from the 1990's. The manual was published in 1995. Is big and is a gold mine of great info for collectors, has a complete run down of all the different models, family names etc. Trent, You can add a lot more info to your bag phone webpage with this info ! One day I may scan it, but not now, I am now in the process of moving house, most of my phones are now packed, very busy ! Cheers, Chris.

Wow, sounds great! I think no one has ever publised those manuals on the net... How many pages? AMPS only or ETACS NMT too? Peter

Hi Peter.
The manual is for AMPS phones only, was intended for the US & Australian markets. About 200 pages, 14 sections. The contents is as follows :
- general information - cellular network specifications & overview - products - warranty & manufacture date - installation - programming requirements - NAM programming - test mode programming - service level test mode programming - comprehensive service mode commands & phasing adjustments - theory of operation - troubleshooting - testing - procedures
This book was the basis for a 2 day training course for Motorola service agents. The test mode section has at least appeared on the internet, but a lot of other info certainly has not. For instance, my info about the Dynatac car phones was incorrect. These car phones are known as the J Family, also called MiniTac. This is for the newer units that are the size of a brick. There were J1, J2, and J2.5 variants. J1 also known as series 1 transceivers ( so the Dynatac 4000 is not a series 1, was another family altogether, not mentioned in my book ). The Microtac phones have funny family names, like Doc, Doe & Porpoise !
Cheers, Chris.

I'd be very interested in seeing the info on the MicroTACs. They seemed to crank these out every week back in the 90's with a slightly different name for each model ten times over, and I still don't know what some of them were officially called.

Hi Mr StarTac.

This info is taken from my Motorola Service Manual.

Hello! Dear Spectreman , Please share this book! Community sure will be grateful! Actually i think there is huge absence and misunderstood`ing about Motorolas , since almost all of them is reffered as "brick" or "microtac" only . some distinct them by SLF/SUF/etc codes , others by "model" - and when it comes to correct determination - there is lots of confusion . For example - recently i got package from US with two DPC550 . both looks identically , both branded by CellularOne , both have a model F09HLD8416AG , but different "SUF code" - one is SUF1228K , another SUF1228D . when i go to DPC550`s page here i found out different model names , different SUF`s and a bunch of confusion . Googling also gives more confusion than info . So - the proper "Motrola Bible" is MUST HAVE!!!

Ok, I will try & scan some of the manual at least & upload it here. Some of the model numbers in it only apply to phones sold in Australia, since it is an Australian specific version.

Chris, I haven't been to this site in over a year and am just seeing this now. This book does sound like a gold mine! Is it a normal bound book, or can the individual pages be removed?

Hi Trent ! Good to see you posting on this website again. Are you still actively collecting old mobiles ? Yes, I must scan the Motorola book soon. It is in a loose leaf folder, so all the pages can easily be removed. It covers most of the models made between about 1989 till 1995. So it does not cover the very first model Dynatac phones, or any of the Startac models. Or GSM models for that matter. (AMPS only). But still covers a lot of good stuff. Keep in mind that it is an Australian market focused book, so a lot of models were named differently to those in the US & Canada.
I will be going on leave in a week, so I should have time then to start scanning. Will keep you posted.
Cheers, Chris.

Hi Chris! I'm not actively collecting for the sole reason that everyone on eBay thinks old phones are worth their weight in gold, but recently someone gave me two working MicroTAC 650e's, so that's motivated me to start dabbling in phone stuff again, for the time being anyway.
I asked if the pages could be removed because I was thinking, at my university they have a scanner that you can drop a bunch of pages into at once, and it scans them all very quickly and automatically loads them all into a PDF document. If it's something you would consider, you could send me the book, and I'd be very happy to scan it all and upload it here.
